Project Description

This project aims to deliver robust, model-based analysis of decarbonisation pathways for energy-intensive industries and the heating sector in Romania, with a particular emphasis on the role of electrification. By strengthening the analytical evidence base, the project seeks to inform national policymakers on feasible, cost-effective transition pathways for sectors that remain central to Romania’s economic structure and long-term competitiveness. Heavy industry continues to play a vital role in the national economy, underscoring the need for sector-specific transition strategies grounded in rigorous modelling.

While electrification is widely recognised as a cornerstone of industrial and heating decarbonisation, existing strategic and planning documents lack the sectoral granularity required to assess the distinct transition needs of individual industries. Building on and extending EPG’s previous work on energy system modelling, industrial transformation, and heating decarbonisation, the project addresses this gap through enhanced analytical depth and sectoral detail.

The project aims to expand the knowledge base on decarbonisation pathways, identify practical solutions for transforming Romanian industry and heating systems, clarify associated requirements, and support the development of a broad social and political mandate for the transition through structured engagement with industry stakeholders, decision-makers, and civil society.
