IN PROGRESS
Designating Acceleration Areas (RAAs) through comprehensive spatial mapping
Project Description
This project supports Romania in meeting its obligations under the revised Renewable Energy Directive (REDIII) by developing a comprehensive methodology for designating Renewable Acceleration Areas (RAAs). Led by EPG in partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the initiative addresses critical gaps in Romania’s renewable energy spatial planning.
Within the project, TNC will develop a three-phase methodology encompassing pre-assessment, assessment criteria definition, and an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for prioritising suitable areas. EPG will coordinate project activities, secure a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Environment and TNC, facilitate stakeholder engagement through workshops and events, and provide policy recommendations. By integrating technical expertise with multi-stakeholder collaboration and engaging local authorities for granular data, the project aims to deliver an actionable framework that balances renewable energy deployment with environmental protection and community acceptance.
